Dairy

Our Dairy Purchasers always give preference to products that are grown without antibiotics or pesticides, and to local products that come from family farmers and dairies. We make every effort to select products that are free of colorings, preservatives, hormones, including rBGH, antibiotics and artificial sweeteners.

Eco-Friendly Reasons to Buy Organic Meat & Dairy

  1. dairy_img1.jpgFree of Antibiotics, Added Hormones, GMO Feed, & Other Drugs; No GMO Animals
Animals raised organically are not fed antibiotics, bovine human growth hormone (rbGH), or other artificial drugs. Under national organic certification rules animals are not permitted to eat genetically modified foods or same species animal proteins, which have been liked to “mad cow” syndrome . Further, animal products certified as organic cannot have their genes modified and there is a strong movement to demand the FDA not allow meat or milk from cloned animals into the commercial, non-organic human food supply.

Organic animals are raised in a healthier environment, fed organic feed, and must have access to pasture. Organically raised animals have been shown to be significantly healthier than their factory-raised counterparts.

The practice of feeding cattle the ground up remains of their same species appears to cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as “Mad Cow disease.  This horrific disease destroys the central nervous system and brain, and can be transferred across the species barrier to infect humans who eat diseased cows. In humans it can have a very long latency period,  as its human counterpart Creutzfeld-Jakob disease.  National Organic rules do not allow the feeding of animal by-products, animals are fed 100 percent organic feed. By choosing organic meat and dairy products, you are protected  form exposure.

Co-op Trade Initiative

The Co-op Trade initiative is an expansion of our efforts to support local farmers, ranchers and producers, bring high quality local/regional food to consumers and build the local food movement economy.

Based on our regional watersheds and traditional acequias the Co-op Trade’s  “food-shed” project serves a 300-mile radius around Albuquerque.

Our Co-op Distribution Center warehouse, the hub of this project, provides pick-up, supply and storage services for producers and distribution of regional products to our four stores and other retail outlets and co-ops.
