Membership is Ownership. From the beginning the Co-op has relied on the vision, involvement and support of its owners for its success. Engaged members ensure that the Co-op remains a strong, socially, economically, and environmentally responsible organization.
In addition to a number of personal benefits, becoming a Co-op owner means you support important community capacity building programs run by the Co-op. Our Co-op Distribution Center helps over 1,100 small- and medium-scale New Mexico food producers distribute their goods. Our Co-op staff provides free operational and technical consulting to other co-ops nationwide. Any un-spent patronage refunds, ten of thousands of dollars, are donated to numerous New Mexico nonprofit organizations. Our Veteran Farmer Program trains veterans in small organic farming techniques and building a small produce business. The Holiday Giving Program collects and delivers holiday gifts to over 600 children in protective custody in New Mexico. We host one of the largest Earth Day Celebrations in the state showcasing local nonprofit organizations, artisan vendors, live music, and lots of family friendly activities. Member Patronage Refund Program—At the end of each fiscal year, if earnings are sufficient, patronage dividends are refunded to members in amounts based on their individual or household purchases. Patronage refund checks are sent out just in time for the holidays! Between 1990, the first year the Co-op began this program, and today the Co-op has paid almost 4 million dollars to its owners in patronage refunds.
Owner Discount Days—The Co-op offers two volume discount months to owners—February and October. During these months, owners can get a discount of up to 20% off the total purchase amount of one shopping trip. In addition, during the month of June we conduct our annual owner survey—by participating you get an additional one-time discount.
Special Orders—You can special order large quantities, hard-to-find items, and items we don’t carry. Owners who order case lots can receive a 10% discounts on their special orders. Information Desk personnel will direct you to the appropriate department for assistance.
Easy Check Writing—Cash ($40) over purchase amount with driver’s license. We accept Debit, VISA, Discover, MasterCard and American Express at our registers.
Grocery Delivery for the Homebound—The Co-op offers senior, homebound and differently-abled owners within Albuquerque city limits free grocery delivery one day a week from our Nob Hill and Rio Grande locations. In the Community:
Owner Participation Program—Owners can volunteer through the Co-op to help us build community capacity in our stores, special events, and with a number of nonprofit partner organizations. By volunteering, owners can earn an 15% discount on a shopping trip at the Co-op for each hour of participation. General Membership Meetings, Board Positions & Voting—Help guide your Co-op into the future by participating in the meetings. You may vote in elections right away. You may also take a more active role in your Co-op and run for the Board of Directors if you have been an owner for at least 4 months. Elections are held every November, nominations are taken between July and September, and information on becoming a board member can be found on our website or by emailing TalkWithTheBoard@lamontanita.coop.
La Montañita FUND—In 2010 La Montañita established a micro-loan fund designed to grow the local food system and strengthen the local economy. Co-op members can become investors in the fund or apply for a loan. The LaMFUND currently has over $110,000 in investments and has made $97,000 in loans to New Mexico agriculture and livestock producers and other coops. Owner Deals are deeply discounted items featured on a bi-monthly rotation as well. These items are hand-picked by our promotions team in collaboration with our staff to provide a valuable shopping experience for our member-owners.
Co-op Deals is a national program featuring popular and competitively priced items. These specials are available to everyone who shops at our stores. Co-ops across the country pool their buying power to participate in this program sponsored by the National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA). Selection of Co-op deals changes on a bi-monthly basis.
