The Veteran Farmer Project (VFP) brings together farming and gardening educators and professionals to provide classroom and hands-on experience geared for veterans but open to the whole community.
Sponsored by La Montañita Co-op, partner organizations and agencies include: Rio Grande Community Farm, the Downtown Action Team, the VA, the NM Department of Agriculture, Bernalillo County Extension Service, Master Gardener Ron Jobe, Bethany Organic Farm, Desert Oasis Teaching Garden, Holistic Management International and other individuals and organizations. It provides the initial training for veterans to start or work at sustainable agriculture businesses as it provides a therapeutic garden space for veterans to learn to grow fresh produce.
The VFP offers an annual workshop series focusing on technical aspects of vegetable production and animal husbandry. Courses will be held throughout the year based on teacher availability and funding.
In addition to ongoing workshops, the VFP grows produce at the Rio Grande Community Farm, provides fresh produce to all participating Veteran families, and sells produce both at the VA Farmer’s Market and to restaurants and Co-op locations.
All veterans, active service and National Guard people are welcome and encouraged to participate in the program. The VA van offers rides to both the classes and garden site from the Albuquerque VA Campus upon request and availability. Contact John Shields to inquire about transportation.
