Veteran Farmer Project

The Veteran Farm Project (VFP) provides Veterans short workshops on sustainable farming practices and hands-on gardening and farming experience. This collaboration between La Montanita Co-op, Downtown Action Team, the VA, the NM Department of Agriculture, and Holistic Management International provides the initial training for Veterans to start or work at sustainable agriculture businesses and it provides a theraputic garden space for veterans to learn to grow fresh produce.

Since January 2012, the VFP has offered annual workshop series focusing on technical aspects of vegetable production and animal husbandry. Courses will happen throughout the year based on teacher availability and funding.

Information on the 2015 Spring class schedule can be found here.

In addition to on-going workshops, the VFP grows produce at the Alvarado Urban Farm year round. In our second growing season, the VFP gardens will supply a stand at the VA Farmers’ Market once a week and feed project participants.

All veterans, active service and National Guard people are welcome and encouraged to participate in the program. The VA van offers rides to both the classes and garden site from the Albuquerque VA Campus upon request and availability. Contact John Shields to inquire about transportation.
